HOW IT STARTED
This is a story of friendship and motherhood…
In 2015, winter was coming and two new mothers in the Cape Winelands of South Africa became aware of what effect the cold season would have on other moms, who did not have a comfortable home and enough warm clothes for their own babies.
They began putting together baskets of newborn essentials, but weren’t sure how best to distribute them.
Separately, another new mother had been working with teenagers in the township of Kayamandi and saw how, time and time again, the lack of support for young women during times of transition into adulthood left a huge hole, often ending in unplanned pregnancies, discouraging and cancelling goals and dreams of brighter futures.
And so the ladies crossed paths and the idea of gathering and distributing baby supplies turned into a long term solution for meeting tangible needs for the young mothers, while uplifting them in healing mind and spirit, through a collective community that’s now known as Her Voice.
Her Voice is her confidence and it’s always been there. It had just been silenced and as we do life together, it’s being strengthened again.
MEET THE TEAM
When seeing the size of our team, one may wonder about salaries and overheads.
We’ve had the amazing gift of quality, committed volunteers since Her Voice started in 2015.
The good news is that as our support network has grown and we’ve been able to hire our first paid staff: our two coordinators for Kayamandi and Cloetesville and our community manager.
These ladies have been part of the Kayamandi programme since the early days and we continue to work toward expanding our staff, as our desire is for the groups we operate in to be run by those who live those communities.
Thank you to those who give to provide salaries! We couldn’t do it without you.
