how it started

This is a story of friendship and motherhood…
Helene was putting together baskets of newborn essentials, but wasn’t sure how best to distribute them. Her friend Carene introduced her to Alex, who’d moved to South Africa from California in 2010 to work with young women in Kayamandi.
She’d since met and married local guy Odwa and become mum of a little girl (now two, with one more on the way). Together they continued to work with teenagers in Kayamandi, but Alex knew that there was also a desperate need for support and friendship among the young women, many of whom are single mothers. And so Helene’s idea of gathering and distributing baby supplies was an answer to prayer. After a few visits with new mums to drop off baskets, Helene and Carene realised that it couldn’t end with a delivery, and together the three of them came up with what is now Her Voice.
